ABOUT COURSE

This course examines the process of organizational learning in the workplace Emphasis will be placed on how individuals and groups have an impact on organizational systems. Theories and practices of individual, group and organizational learning will be explored. Factors that influence learning in the workplace, such as power, position in the organization, diversity and globalization will be discussed. Theoretical and practical issues of organizational learning in the workplace will also be discussed. Other conceptual concepts related to organizational learning such as interpersonal relationships, group dynamics. organizational behavior and organizational development will also be emphasized.


DEFINITION
OL as a process in which an organization’s members actively use data to guide behaviour in such a way as to promote the on going adaptation of the organization (Edmondson & Moingeon, 1998).

1. Use of data = to seek and attend to task-relevant information; assessing collective performance and progress against goals.
2. Guiding behaviour = choosing actions based on data-driven observation.
3. Adaptation = change by an organization in response to external changes (problems and opportunities).

ongoing adaptation = sustained attention to relevant data (results of new actions).

iterative cycle = acting, assessing and acting again.
